MATCH REPORT: Winscombe Ladies 3rd XI 0, Chippenham 4th XI 9
Winscombe 3rd XI showed great spirit and determination but were well beaten by Chippenham 4th XI, despite playing some good hockey.
Playing without a goalkeeper against a team that had come down from the division above, Combe conceded two early goals before settling into some decent play.
Well-worked combinations involving midfielders Eleanor Thatcher, Emma Whitehead, Imogen Marsh and captain Gill Harvey helped to turn defence into attack, trying to feed the ball to forwards Helen Sinclair and Shirley Hartshorne, but chances were few and far between.
The skilful and experienced Chippenham team were 3-0 up at half-time but player of the match Sarah Kempster took the game to the visitors after the break with skilful stick work, determination and a positive attitude.
However, Chippenham seemed to find an even higher gear and Winscombe could not prevent them adding a further six goals, despite defending valiantly to the final whistle, with Jo Hann playing outfield with goalkeeping privileges and even facing a penalty flick.
John Hodge Solicitors player of the match: Sarah Kempster.
Winscombe Ladies Hockey Club are looking for a goalkeeper, with full training provided.
